Protein & Calcium
When people decide to cut out the junk food, switching focus to eating healthy or perhaps just tackling a 7 day juice cleanse, it is not uncommon to suddenly express concern about protein & calcium intake.
From the day we were born, we have been bombarded repeatedly with the message that meat and milk are crucial to a diet, even mandatory for our bodies to be healthy. But how does the “meat” get its protein? Cows graze on grass, chewing or “juicing” which processes and converts the grass into protein. These animals now have protein. We can do this same thing, and just eliminate the middle man, or cow. All fruits and vegetables provide calcium and amino acids, which are the building blocks to protein, creating only the exact amounts or ratio our bodies need.
• Onions and turnips are loaded with calcium.
• Almonds contain more calcium per 100g than plain yogurt.
• Almonds contain almost as much protein as red meat and 6%
• Spirulina is the highest natural protein food on the planet with all of the essential amino acids required for optimum health.
Take a look at the Gorilla or Bull Elephant, the latter being the largest land animal in the world. Both have incredible muscles. Neither consume meat or dairy.
Essentially, when omitting meat for the diet, the fear of not getting enough protein or calcium is the culmination of decades of marketing propaganda by the meat and dairy industries.
Another example of how powerful marketing can be: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” This is a phrase you’ve likely heard many times before. But what you probably didn’t know is this originated from a General Foods marketing campaign in 1944 to push sales of their breakfast cereal. It worked so well, that this radio ad message has become ingrained into our brains to this very day.
Fiber
Fiber can be a concern when using a juice-only program. While much of the fiber is removed when you juice, the soluble fiber remains in the juice itself. You can also add psyllium husks (a great natural source of dietary fiber) to keep you “moving”. Adding a whole avocado will also provide plenty of fiber, as a side note avocados are one of the most complete foods on the planet. Fiber cannot penetrate through the intestinal wall, only the juice contained within the fibers of the fruits & vegetables that feeds the body. The fibre is there to act as a ‘brush’ to keep things moving in the colon, a job which the psyllium husks can do more than adequately.
